Next Sunday, September 7, begins our 2008/09 ministry year. As I sought the Lord’s guidance for an emphasis, He impressed on me the need for revival. For many the term revival conjures up images of large tents with sawdust floors, fiery preachers and multitudes walking the aisle for salvation. However, revival should not be confused with evangelistic work. As one author put it, “one cannot be re-vived until they have first been vived”. In other words, “revival” is for those who belong to Christ but have become dull, asleep, disinterested, or inactive in the things of God. More precisely, revival is renewed interest after a period of indifference or decline.

image It is the assessment of the elders, pastoral staff—myself included—that while there is much religious activity and an adherence to Biblical doctrine, a renewed passion for God will help us move past the decline that has plagued our church for some time. We are currently analyzing many aspects of the ministry and making plans for new initiatives to be put into play. However, if we get all of the technical stuff right, but lack the spiritual heart for God and our fellow man, then all of the right planning, programs and procedures are of little value. In addition to our streamlining, simplifying, aligning and planning, we must also attack the problem of spiritual indifference.

As I pray, seek God’s Word and ask the Holy Spirit to help me lead toward revival, what is it specifically that I’m hoping will happen? Three things:

  1. Individual and corporate renewal of obedience to the known will of God: There are many things we don’t have to pray about. We already know what God wants us to do. We must commit to being “…doers of the word, not hearers only.” James 1:22
  2. Individually and corporately being drawn into a deeper experience with Christ: It is all too easy to stay with surface, shallow stuff. Jesus said we need to “…hunger and thirst after righteousness...” If we do, then “…we will be filled.” Matthew 5:6.
  3. Individually and corporately developing a deeper concern for the spiritual condition of our community: We must turn our eyes outward with greater concern for the community around us. They have many issues, but their greatest need is the saving grace of Christ Jesus.

I believe that First Federated needs revival and that God wants to bring it. Therefore, the elders, staff and I have chosen Spiritual Renewal as the emphasis for the 2008/2009 ministry year. There are seven areas of focus to which we will give our attention.

Renew our:

  • Passion for Jesus
  • Relationships
  • Focus on Christmas
  • Vision
  • Faith
  • Heart for Others
  • Service

Please join me in prayer that God would renew our hearts with a passion for Him, our community and each other.
