The Blessing and Privilege of Serving in the Children’s Ministry
For over twenty years I have had the privilege and honor of serving in many capacities in our Children’s Ministry, mostly in 3rd–6th grade.
In August of 2007, due to teaching needs already being met, I found myself not serving anywhere in the Children’s Ministry. This was unfamiliar territory. I was actually very disappointed. During a Wednesday night meal, I shared with Sherri Stufflebeem (our awesome Children’s Director) how weird it was not to be teaching or helping in the Children’s Ministry. She asked me to consider helping in the early childhood area. A few days later, Jeni Baugher (equally awesome) called and asked if I would be interested in teaching 2–3 year olds. As I was praying about it, I tried to remember what 2–3 year olds were like. It had been 13 years since my son Brandon was 3. To be honest, I wasn’t sure it would be a good fit.
God often has different plans for us. After praying about it, I was led to give it a try. Words cannot express the joy and blessing it has been to teach and be with this group of now 3–4 year olds! What a wonderful blessing and opportunity God has given me to teach these awesome girls and boys. To walk into the room and hear, “Hi, Mr. Tom!”, to see faces light up when they see me, and to get spontaneous hugs are just some of the many blessings. The biggest blessing is the opportunity to teach them about Jesus and to see their faces light up when we share about Jesus’ love for us. And to think that I came very close to missing this wonderful blessing.
The things that sometimes seem the smallest end up being the biggest blessing and joy.
The Children’s Ministry is an awesome place to serve!
In Christ, Mr. Tom
We are so grateful for Mr. Tom Gable (and many others like him!) who have discovered the joy of serving our young ones. He loves the kids and they love him. It just doesn’t get much better than that!
With 6 volunteer positions still open in our preschool, I’m sad to think that somewhere six people are missing the blessing God intended for them… Hmmm. Is it YOU??!!!!

Both! In Jesus, we see that He valued private prayer…
