Roy Porter
Pastor Emeritus of Missions
February 21, 1925-May 22, 2007
His Earthly Work Complete…
In your dictionary under the term servant-hearted should be a picture of Roy Porter. Included in the definition should be concepts like indefatigable, hard-working, generous, gracious, kind, compassionate, and committed to bringing glory to God in all activities. Roy finished his writing of that definition when he passed away on Tuesday morning, May 22, 2007.
In the Bible, Paul points to the supremacy of God in bringing people to faith in Him through Jesus. He writes, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth.” Roy lived out his spiritual passion in this realm by bringing people face-to-face with the reality of God. He planted; he watered; and he relied heavily on God for the harvest.
Roy’s passion for spreading the truth about eternal life through Jesus was infectious. During his 31-year tenure as Director of Missions, Roy consistently and persistently raised the level of commitment, practical involvement, and financial support for world-wide evangelism at FFC.
As many of you know, Roy actively served in the community as well. Roy served as Mayor of Clive from 1970-1978, and was instrumental in the initiation and development of the Clive Greenbelt.
Even as we are saddened by the loss of the earthly treasure God gave to the FFC family in the form of Roy, our hearts go out in sympathy to the family he left behind: his wife Rhonda, his son John who accepted the position of Missions Director upon Roy’s retirement, his daughter Sue Farho, and eldest son Jim.
Jesus told a parable of what it would be like to enter heaven. In Matthew 25:21, we read these words of welcome to those who have been faithful workers: “Well done, good and faithful servant. You were faithful with a few things. I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.” As Roy has entered the presence of God, it isn’t hard to imagine that he will find a place to pour out his servant-heart.
